IMAGINARY CORRESPONDENCES

The discovery and learning of collage was at first a composition of graphical and abstract elements. Having studied the Latin calligraphy and typography, the design of the letter itself is what interested me. (I.e., the dadaists 1)

I accumulated all kinds of writings (Latin, Asian and Arab), of languages and different penmanships (Greek, Gothic, English, Chinese, Japanese,Tibetans, Sanskrit, Hebraic, Arab).
I wanted them from different times and sources: manuscripts, diaries, epistolary (letters, postcards written with a feather), printed (newspapers,posters, packing or administrative papers)…

Unceasingly in search of this raw material: the paper, the writing, the symbol.

From 1998 I explain my approach:

“The writing is also a meeting of gestures and colors. It travels through familiar universes (administrative papers, schoolboys' notebooks, posters…) to find itself in a new world of interpretations. I wish to offer a reading to each one, through collage. The imaginary is passing through our letters, and gives a new life to the words, exceeding our senses and our recognitions. To show up the universal and timeless memory of paper”.

In search of the NOTHING in what it has of denied, thrown, rejected, separated from the WHOLE.

An unconscious work of this memory thrown to the refuse, or passed from hands to hands until me.

"A characteristic of man is that he doesn't know what to do with his waste". 2

I collect in the dustbins, the cellars, the storage rooms, in the same way that an archeologist or the ragman, I'm searching, I seek the prints, I sort them by sizes to facilitate my compositions, I tear them before sticking them. I never cut using scissors, to give way to this tear so important to me.

”Because one cannot rebuild without destroying, The tear?
I believed a long time that it was only a process.
As a matter of fact, she belongs to me, I am the tear,
and any tear implies a very particular care.
It is already a history, because it is possible to read between the lines, by stages of colors and lines, but also between paper and the tear, by the transparency…
It's all the paradox in collage, because it is all about thickness, volume, texture;
however, there is nothing, nothing more but this space there, this lost bond,
this recomposed modification starting from an unpredictable tear in paper.”

An increasingly strong desire to show “the man” in what it creates and what it destroys, like a sentimental drunkness.

My meeting with AMBROISE MONOD and the “RÉCUP' ART” made me realize how much we want to make this ART contagious!

”Giving back to the thrown object the opportunity to resume his role in the visual universe, according to a new purpose or as an actual form without any utility.

To hope for the imagination an unbounded field, an escapade outside the rules, of the traditions, of the social standards, in order to give to the creativity the freedom to create or not, beautiful or ugly, petty or grand.

Create from waste, from repudiated objects, abandoned materials, elements of landfills, is to renounce the inevitability of decay, and to establish that creation is still a festival in spite of ridiculous or derision means.

User debris left by the society of abundance, is to put a look of humor on the technical progress by giving the ephemeral thing a chance to disappear more slowly and to last as an object.

Politicize the existence, it is also to seize the opportunities to free the imagination, to disobey the norm, to desert the legality, to realize the imaginary in an act that exists for the person who lives it, which survives differently to one who sees it and which prefigures the hoped release of the world.

ART: common noun, curiously male. Can define everything.” 3

All this forms a sort of a will, recomposed by myself; with this surprising contemporary realism of testimonies from time and from different centuries. Semantic collages at the source of several possible narratives, subjective lines of a narrative desire.

Personal diary of "Claude" 4, 1933:

"The 'forms' disappear more and more,
the regime becomes rough.
They bang.
Gone, the liberalism of the utopian republic
of the human rights. This garbage called "democracy" which in
the slightest things deceives you and lies to you
making itself more cynical.
But what the hell are we there…
Will we let ourselves eat?
Are the people enough degenerated
to let themselves be crushed so cowardly?
It is a question of life or death
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "

“The principle of art: find more than what was lost” 5

There is no chronological order in these correspondences (a letter, written in 1940 stuck next to an overexposed photograph from the 70s) of which i am the depositary.
I rehabilitate these tracks, I recompose the past (papers turned yellow by time) associated, merged and mixed with the present time (papers showing the printing halftones), as an universal weft.

DUBUFFET crushed the garbage, he told to try to return " the soul " of the dust, to make hear "its voices".

This universe made of souvenirs, mine, yours, ours and that of our predecessors.

Certain confidences of the public, during openings, reminded me that this work was essential.
- Against the current of our world of immediate consumption, and overconsumption.
- In the era of Internet where the e-mail replaces the letter, or the digital technology replaces the argentic.
- As if there was not a place anymore for the fault, for "THE IMPERFECT", no more overexposed or badly centred photographs, vain joys, written clumsiness, or simply some errors, because everything can be "deleted".

Say that from the NOTHING we can make EVERYTHING, create everything: As the CARTONEROS of Argentina which collect and recycle papers and cardboards boxes:

"HISTORIAS" (a magazine written and printed by themselves, on recycled paper) is a fight against the injustice and the arrogance of those who exclude. It is the stand of the one who does not resign himself. It is also the possibility to build a work, worthy and free As we are a part of the problem, we are a part of the solution, It is our attempt for a solution! "

The purpose of all these movements is to build organization and solidarity; it also is to break with the individualism, and so to get back a real collective humanism.

To end I shall make mine this quotation of Dali:
"Distrust the contemporary disorder, it may be the excellent which we throw out"
